The SCIM, now in its third iteration, is a disability scale developed to specifically address the ability of individuals with SCI to accomplish various functional activities. The SCIM assesses three areas:self-care (feeding, grooming, bathing, and dressing); breathing and bowel and bladder management and mobility (bed and transfers and indoor/outdoor). Each question is design to address the abilities of the patient, as well as the level of assistance they need.
